The program
MAGKS is an inter-university graduate program comprised of seven German universities – Philipps University Marburg, RWTH Aachen, Justus-Liebig-University Gießen, Georg-August-University Göttingen, the University of Kassel, the University of Siegen and the Heinrich-Heine-University Düsseldorf. It provides advanced education at the doctoral level and research support for beginning doctoral scholars who are already working on their PhD under the supervision of one of the professors of the participating universities.
Background
MAGKS was established in the summer term 2007 based on the recognition that there is an increasing gap between the education provided by universities in Master programs and the requirements for active research in economics. Current research published in academic journals has achieved a level of technical complexity that goes well beyond material covered in undergraduate and postgraduate education. To help PhD students close that gap and enable them to do theoretical and empirical work on their own that is publishable in international journals, the partner universities and participating faculty have created MAGKS .
A large variety of courses
The MAGKS program combines the joint competence of the six faculties in order to provide advanced education in all fields of economics. Thus, the doctoral students of participating universities benefit from a large variety of courses, methods and faculty that could not be supplied by a single university.
MAGKS regularly offers core courses in:
- Advanced Macroeconomics
- Advanced Microeconomics
- Empirical Methods
In addition to these core courses, MAGKS students can take part in courses on specialized topics according to their individual fields of interest. In order to meet individual needs and interests, doctoral students select their courses individually. However, since enrolment is generally limited to 20 to 25 participants, students are recommended to register for the desired course well in advance.
Making use of research networks
MAGKS aims to establish an interuniversity research network and brings together faculty with younger scholars and advanced students. Each semester, the MAGKS workshop gives doctoral students the opportunity to present their research to faculty and fellow students.
Enrolling
MAGKS is not a PhD program but an inter-university network to help the Economics PhD-Students of the participating universities. As such there is no enrollment in MAGKS. If you would like to study for your PhD, feel free to contact our faculty to see whether they can supervise your dissertation.
